Coffey has been extremely proactive in the international community through his role as the Secretary General of the Federation of International Touch (FIT). TFA has been very supportive of this commitment and has no doubt that Dennis will continue to fulfil an important role in the development of the game internationally. This commitment and other circumstances have resulted in the resignation at this time.
Coffey first got involved in the sport of Touch Football in 1977 when he was a first grade Rugby player and played with an Army team called the Green Machine. Since then Coffey has been heavily involved in Touch Football on and off the field, with plenty of highlights along the way.
Coffey’s highlights include playing in the first World Cup in 1988 and being named in the World All Stars team at that event as well as coaching the Australia Men’s 30’s to the World Cup title in 2003.
Off the field, Coffey’s achievements include his role as the National Coaching Director, his involvement with the Australian Defence Force Association as well being the first state director of Queensland Touch. Coffey has also attended every National Championships from 1980 until now.
For now, Coffey is busy with his role with FIT, and is looking forward to the future.
“There’s a lot to do. I’m enjoying it, you don’t do this unless you get some sort of satisfaction out of it, any volunteer does what they do because of satisfaction. The prime drive for a volunteer is personal satisfaction.”
“The work is just so necessary if we are to develop the sport globally in some way similar to some way we have done in Australia. It needs time, energy, effort, policies, support, resources, a whole range of issues to enable other countries to do what Australia has done,” Coffey said.
TFA Chief Executive Officer, Colm Maguire, says that the organisation and the sport in general are very thankful for all of Coffey’s efforts throughout the years.
“TFA is indebted to the long term support of Dennis and wishes him all the best with his current priorities,” Maguire said.
“We will no doubt still have the opportunity for Dennis to work with us all through his passion for coaching and we look forward to any such opportunity.”
